Dave the Bear was recently in Berlin and stopped by for a face to face chat about what is going on in his world. Best known for his cabaret shows in the club scene of London and beyond, Dave is a person of many talents all packed into the cutest bear package that you can see here with his sexy pics.

Dave, can you tell us how ‘Dave the Bear’ all got started?

While it is most people’s ambition to be working in a field that they studied in and really love, right after finishing university, I was lucky to have the opportunity work professionally and tour with big budget musical productions but it started to become too repetitive for me and in the end had no soul. Singing on stage with others was a dream come true but it was the repetitiveness of performing the same program night after night for months at a time that finally made me decide to move on and try to make it on my own path.

Who is your all time singing inspiration?

I have to give this honour to Grammy Award winning singer songwriter Will Withers as my idol – with his famous bluesy and sad songs such as “Lean on Me”, “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Lovely Day”. The first and foremost is putting yourself out there, I completely understand that one … and admire you for that!

Any other influencers?

I also have to include Toni Braxton and Whitney Houston in this group too. Half jokingly, I have to confide that troubled people with drinking problems are a major focus of inspiration for the sad but, hopefully entertaining, original songs of my own. The first and foremost is putting yourself out there, I completely understand that one … and admire you for that !

What is the story of your solo career?

I started doing a Vaudville style act with a partner in the London clubs and this was a big step in the right direction. It definitely takes a lot of energy and hard work to keep the show going on your own. With the help of a dedicated collaborator, we managed quite well for ourselves. Later, I started doing some solo gigs – it was about ten years ago now that I did my first solo Burlesque stage acts. Slowly it blossomed into a world all its own and I loved it.

This was augmented with being a Go-Go boy, performing at London gay clubs like Brute and DILF.  With a lot of perseverance, in 2015 I was named the #1 male Burlesque performer in the UK and the winner at the Vienna Boylesque Festival in 2016.

I am super excited that I will also be a guest judge on the new, X-Factor type talent show called All Together Now showing on BBC One.

And what is next for you?

Going into the studio to make some new tracks for a full album is tops on my list for 2019!

With your on stage persona of Vaudville, Boylesque, Singer, et al, how do you deal with this position in reference to making a positive contribution to the queer community at large?

The first and foremost is putting yourself out there, I completely understand that one…. and admire you for that!

Do you have any kind of agenda that you are personally promoting with your performances ? Unity, Resistance, Community or whirled peas?

A message that I try to portray is that it’s ok to be yourself, that is the best person you can be. I don’t like to be defined as just gay or just a bear or just a singer, that is why I do so many different things. I mean I don’t have the best body in the world, especially in a gay world but it hasn’t stopped me making a good career as a stripper I find bodies like mine more attractive than chiselled Adonis and I know many other men and women do too.

Also with my music, singing in cabaret clubs it would be obvious and very easy for me to sing typical “cabaret” show tunes but I’ve tried that and it was awful because it wasn’t authentic. I come alive singing blues and heartfelt soul music and it comes across on stage. I think it’s good to push boundaries and challenge an audience rather than rehash what I’ve seen other performers do. I do well, because I do me. Staying healthy and projecting positivity I think is very important. Now, my Oscar acceptance speech is over. LOL!
