When you think of the picturesque cobbled streets of Zurich with pristine Alpine scenes all around, you might not instantly think to look for an underground queer sex party. Well, think again.

Brian McCabe and his business partner Dominik Cavalli are causing a stir throughout the Alps (and beyond) with EXPLICIT, a sex-positive queer dance party with three key values: respect, love and consent.

We caught up with Brian last weekend, just as the party was finishing…

Danny Polaris: Brian, how does a party like this fit with the traditional image of Zurich and Swiss guys? Are they a lot naughier than they appear on the surface?

Brian McCabe: The Swiss are totally naughty and kinky. To be honest based on the feedback and success of the party last Friday, I feel the city has been crying out for something like this for a while. We are filling a little bit of a niche.

There isn’t really anything like it happening in the city centre these days (apart from one or two underground parties). That said, in the 90s Zürich used to be a bit like Berlin, all the best gay clubs had dark rooms and a bit of kink going on.

Then a new mayor came in and cleaned up the city. In a way it was good actually as it brought the straights and the gays together and the dance scene became super-mixed. But to coexist in their spaces the sexual element was lost. Now I think the scene is ready… we tried being heteronormative and we’re over it.

DP: What does queer mean to you?

BC: This is an interesting question. I do personally love the word as it feels very inclusive to me. A word that captures all letters in our ever growing LGBT+ alphabet.

I do know for some that it has a hurtful past and is a word that caused them some pain. Still for me it helps me with my identity.

I used to identify 100% homosexual but these days I identify more as queer. I have recently realised I am sexually attracted to male presenting, so it’s not necessarily about which body parts a person has for me.

I’m hanging out with a wonderful gender-bending cis woman these days, she’s a drag king and I have to tell you she confuses the hell out of me sexually. So these days I’m feeling more and more queer.

DP: What’s the raunchiest, sexiest thing you saw happen at the party? Not mentioning any names of course…

BC: Haha, now I wouldn’t be a very discreet host if I revealed something like that. What amazed me overall is that everyone ‘got’ the space we were trying to create. It was our first party but the crowd were amazing. It was like 75% men but we had some women and all of them turned it out in their looks.

We had so much leather, rubber and gear but also some drag and I loved that. Everyone just came as their most sex-positive self-expression and it was wonderful.

We had dominatrix women in the corner ready to punish any homo that happened to walk by. Boys in heels bent over in the darkroom as well as the typical masc leather and rubber daddies.

The playroom was a little more male but I did see a lot go down. Actually from around 0:30-6:00 it was never not full. I’m not gonna say any more as I don’t kiss and tell.

DP: What else do you have coming up?

BC: So Dominik and I are never not busy. We have three queer events currently on the go in our city. Next up is Kweer Ball our ball-scene-inspired dance party.

Our next party is themed Sex Ball on April 27th and will also have a playroom too. It’s a little more queer than Explicit but has the most amazing crowd and energy.

We also have Drag Brunch Zürich coming on May 26th but hurry if you are interested, as it’s sold out. And of course we are looking for a date for Explict 2 so keep your eyes on our Facebook page and Instagram to stay up to date.
